Established in 1982, National Museum of Art faces the Plaza Tolsá with a statue of Carlos IV at the entrance. It was built in 1904 and designed by Italian Architect, Silvio Contri, as the Palacio de Comunicaciones.

The Museum houses a collection representing the history of Mexican art from the late pre- hispanic era to the early 20th century.

It has 14 exhibit halls with a room devoted to plastic arts, of México, from the 1930s to the 1960s. Other rooms feature revolving exhibits of contemporary painters, sculptors, lithographers, and photographers from around the world.

The building itself is very attractive apart from the works it exhibits. It has a magnificent staircase made by the Florentine firm Pignone. The marble sculptures now found in the museum's lobby were once displayed in the Alameda Central.
