Rufino Tamayo: The Search for the Essence focuses on paintings, sculptures and works on paper made during the 1930s through the 1980s. Museo Rufino Tamayo which opened in 1981 exhibits some of Rufino Tamayo's paintings, sculptures, tapestries, photographs, drawings and graphic works from 174 contemporary artists, as well as an important grouping of his own work.

The large interior space offer a leisurely walk to admire paintings and sculptures from internationally renowned artists as Dalí, Picasso, Magritte, Warhol, de Kooning, Moore and Miró.

The Museum has a Center of Documentation specializing in plastic arts and the life and works of Rufino Tamayo. This Center grants consultant's office and support to students, investigators and public in general.

The museum often hosts conferences, representations, spectacles of dance, concerts, courses, factories, guided visits etc. It even has a cafeteria, bookshop and library.
