Immigration
Mexico City is a key Latin American city. Immigration has contributed a lot to the growth of the population in Mexico City. From an estimated population of three million people in 1950, the population in Mexico City expanded to about 18 million by year 2000. The immigration trends of the city are fueled by the corresponding growth in importance of Mexico City in various respects. Most of the major immigration trends of the city occurred in the 20th century. Though Mexico City was devastated by a major earthquake back in 1985 that wrought $4 billion in total damages and huge casualties, this hasn’t reduced the growth potential of the city at all. Mexico City is still expanding in importance in both cultural and economic aspects.
Economic importance
The economic importance of Mexico City is admittedly high because it is one of the most significant Latin American commercial and financial centers at present. The population in Mexico City is pretty big and poverty afflicts 15% of that group (compared to 36% of the total population in all of the country of Mexico.) But there are many members of the population in Mexico City who are benefitting from the economic importance of the city. For instance, almost all Mexico City households own a phone line while 58% of the city’s occupants own their own cell phone. Around half of the Mexico City inhabitants are also blessed with Internet access. Many indigenous groups have contributed to the growth of the population in Mexico City lately.
