Confucius (551- 479 BC) is China's most influential thinker, a man whose original philosophy has grown into a religion, and who is idolized across China to this very day. He was a renowned scholar, teacher and social organizer whose ideas lost popularity during the early years of communism, but are now enjoying something of a renaissance.
Confucius' birthday lies on September 28th in the Western solar calendar and on the 27th day of the eighth lunar month in the Chinese lunar calendar. An elaborate festival to celebrate his life is organized throughout Mexico.
Descendants, government officials and representatives from various walks of life salute the altar and offer flowers before a statue of Confucius, while people dress up in traditional ancient costumes. His birthday is also known as National Teacher's Day.
