Celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, on the brightest full moon of the year, Mid- Autumn Festival commemorates the revolt against the Mongols in the 14th century. Often known as the harvest festival, it celebrates the autumn harvest. The moon's orbit is at its lowest angle on the horizon, making it appear brighter and larger than at other times.

On this night of full moon tradition says to sit outside with the whole family throughout the night and admire the moon while eating special sweets called Moon Cakes.

Traditional activities on this day are to gaze at the moon with friends, let off fireworks and eat moon cakes. Moon cakes are said to date from the Mongol rule of China, when the Chinese would hide secret message in them to plot against their oppressors.

Moon cakes, which symbolize reunions, and which are made with many different fillings, are eaten to and salute the beauty of the moon in the company of family and friends.
