Soccer
There are probably a lot of young athletes in Mexico City who are probably aspiring to one day represent their city and country in the world of international soccer tournaments. Mexico City is mad about soccer, having hosted the Football World Cup twice (during years 1970 and 1986.) Mexico City has also hosted one Olympiad which is the 1968 Olympic Games, aside from the 1955 Pan American Games.
Swimming
Somehow, when one thinks of young athletes in Mexico City training for sports, you wouldn’t automatically think of swimming as an event that Mexicans can excel at. Yet, Mexico City had been able to win one gold medal in swimming during the 1968 Summer Olympics, courtesy of swimmer Felipe Munoz. Munoz was able to get his gold by topping the 200-metre men’s butterfly finals that year. Mexico City was also the host city for that year’s Olympiad.
