The floating gardens of Xochimilco (Aztec meaning ‘place of the flowers') known as Chinampas were built more than 700 years ago by the Aztecs. It is a perfect place for a picnic for the families on a Sunday or for young people to party on Saturday nights with amazing food, drinks and both Marimba and Mariachi music.

The best way to see the gardens which is full of flowers, fruit trees, medicinal and edible plants, is to take a ride in the colorful Trajineras (boats) through 50 miles of canals. The trajineras are all roofed and decorated with fake flowers and each has a woman's name and benches alongside the boat with tables in the middle for every traveler to sit.

While afloat you can enjoy mariachis, Mexican food and arts and crafts. Vendors are there to cater to your needs. Besides the journey through the canals, you can also walk in the colonial neighborhood of Xochimilco filled with colorful flower markets and restaurants.
